A brief introduction into the Science of Breath work

Breathing is something we have never really been taught how to do properly, we each breath from a natural instinct to survive, keeping the primitive part of the brain in constant activation – living in that never ending ‘fight or flight’ response mode. Well, that all changes now – because with this exercise you will learn to reclaim your own life and become the alchemist of your own physiology.

Keep in mind that the more you breathe – the more you tire!

So, put simply; the aim of this practice is to help you achieve a constant state of conscious breathing, slowing your breath rate down to 4-6 breaths per minute which in turn will bring a life of vitality and LONGEVITY!

Like the waves as they draw in and out upon the shore, your breath should always be SMOOTH AND CONSISTENT WITHOUT ANY PAUSES.

BELLY BREATHING! Unconsciously the majority of us breathe shallow and fast into the chest region, this actually increases levels of stress and anxiety and tires us mentally and physically without even realising. If you look at a new born baby, you will see that their stomach inflates and deflates like a balloon simultaneously – using their entire diaphragm to charge up and pump new energy around the body! As adults we loose touch with our simplest of abilities and become shallow, fast-paced unconscious breathers. We want to reverse this habit as much as possible.
AN EXERCISE: Lay on your back, and place something heavy like a yoga block on your belly, now use your stomach to lift the block as you breathe in and out. With time and practice you will regain the unconscious ability to breathe into your stomach at all times.

NOSTRIL BREATHING! As much as you consciously can, breathe through your nose, past your chest and down into your belly. Your nostrils filter and warm the air we breathe in which encourages the oxygen to travel to the lower parts of the lungs where more parasympathetic nervous system receptors can be found. It also gives more time for oxygen to be absorbed by the blood & produces Nitric Oxide. This will keep your nervous system calm, and will keep you in the present moment with a heightened ability to witness emotions in stressful situations as opposed to falling a victim to them. BECOME YOUR OWN MASTER, YOU HAVE CONTROL OF YOUR MIND!

BREATHOLDS! Why do we empty our lungs and hold for as long as possible? When we empty our bodies of oxygen, the 02 levels in the blood cells drop & the c02 rises! Most of our lives we have been led to believe that 02 in the body is good, while some part of this is true, we also need a balance of c02 for our bodies to function properly & make use of that oxygen. TOO MUCH OXYGEN LEADS TO OXIDATIVE STRESS, which explained simply can be compared to the rusting of metal when left exposed for long periods of time. When we have a constant level of high o2 in the blood, it creates rusting of the cells, arteries, veins & can lead to cell and tissue damage. SO! Holding your breath with empty lungs raises C02 levels, which activates the PNS, reduces inflammation in the body, stimulates the growth and circulation of uncharacterised stem cells, achieves directed neurogenesis & dilates veins & arteries improving blood flow.
